What we offer on a school trip
Our KS2-tailored programme offers a unique, immersive experience that enables pupils to discover all about the Anglo-Saxon times through exploring two exciting venues.
At 878 AD, pupils travel back in time as they step into the role of an allocated character on the evening before the Battle of Edington! Learners can dress up in Saxon costumes throughout their visit and complete Anglo-Saxon challenges whilst experiencing the sounds and smells of the city, walking amongst Anglo-Saxon villagers and discovering objects from the time.
At Winchester City Museum, pupils can embed the learning from their immersive experience through teacher-led object handling, exploring further Anglo-Saxon artefacts and completing a Time Travellers Guide workbook which they can take back to the classroom as a reminder of their discoveries!
The great news is that having two venues means that we can cater for two classes in one day – simply let us know on your initial enquiry form how many classes you would like to book for!

What is typically included on our school trips
- Buy and Trade in the marketplace – Take part in negotiation and numeracy using mental methods with a costumed trader as you buy and trade Anglo-Saxon replica items.
- Discover Authentic Artefacts on the city streets – Enjoy an Anglo-Saxon style scavenger hunt and collect runes for hidden information.
- Visit the Anglo-Saxon House – Use problem-solving and literacy skills to solve and complete Anglo-Saxon riddles.
- History – Develop understanding of Anglo-Saxon village life and culture.
- History – Understand the reasons behind the Viking invasion and the importance of the Battle of Eddington and resistance of Alfred the Great.
- English – Understand what a riddle is and help compose one.
- Maths – Practice problem solving using mental methods.

Materials, Resources & Information Provided
During your visit to Winchester City Museum, we provide a Time Travellers Guide for all visiting pupils to guide them around the Anglo-Saxon floor on the museum. This is available for them to take back to school as a record of their learning. This guide has been developed by Hampshire Cultural Trust and can viewed prior to a visit, upon request.

Risk Assessment is sent along with the Teachers Pack once the Booking has been confirmed.

First Aid Information
Teachers are required to bring their own qualified First Aid trained member of staff and First Aid Kit.
Available Facilities
We do not have a lunch room on site but are sometimes able to arrange a lunch facility with an external venue for an additional fee. In the summer months, we are able to signpost you to some great spots for lunch in the good weather. Toilets are not available in the 878 AD venue but can be found at the coach drop-off in Abbey Gardens and on the upper parking floor of the Brooks Shopping Centre where 878 AD is located.
Accessibility & Disabled Facilities
878 AD is fully accessible for wheelchairs. It is on one floor in The Brooks Shopping Centre and can be accessed either by a ramp from street level or by lift. Clearly identifiable assistance dogs are welcome.
The attraction includes multi-sensory elements, such as sounds. At times, the lighting is dimmed and there is flashing imagery
Accessible facilities at The Brooks are available in the customer toilets which are located on the upper level parking.
City Museum is also fully accessible, with a lift to all three floors.
